Arriving at Itami Instead

A surprising number of arrival plans go wrong on one fact: Osaka has two airports, and they are an hour apart.

ITM Is Not KIX

Kansai International (KIX) is the island airport in the bay — international flights, the Haruka, everything else on this site. Itami (ITM) is the older domestic airport north of Osaka city. If you are connecting from Tokyo, Sapporo or Fukuoka on a domestic leg, you likely land at Itami — and Itami is actually closer to Kyoto than KIX is.

From Itami to Kyoto

• The airport limousine bus is the standard answer: direct to Kyoto Station in about 50–55 minutes, running once or twice an hour. Sources quote the fare between ¥1,280 and ¥1,500 — buy at the kerbside counter and trust the posted price over any website, including this one.
• There is no direct train — rail from Itami means a monorail plus changes, which is nobody’s first choice with luggage.
• Private transfers cover Itami too: a per-person private option from $41 (4.9/5 from 44 reviews) and a per-group car up to 5 from $147 — the same group logic as KIX, over a shorter distance.

The Planning Point

If you are booking a domestic connection and Kyoto is the destination, landing at Itami is a feature, not a mistake — shorter transfer, simpler ride. Just do not book a KIX transfer for an ITM arrival: check the three-letter code on the ticket before you book anything on this site or anywhere else.
